Lead Engineer of #NASA #LabFamily #proudalumni #classof91 Shawn Armstrong
The Lab School afforded me the opportunity to pursue my dreams and reach my potential athletically, academically and personally. Athletically I was privileged to fall under the guidance of Coach Carl Porter, Coach Grover Perkins and even though I didn’t play basketball, I learned a lot from Coach Joel Hawkins as well. I was also a member of the Class 1A State Champion Track & Field Team.
Academically, having someone teach and guide you from a perspective that’s similar to yours can make a big difference in how well you retain information. Mrs. Nunnery, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Henderson, Coach Jones, Mr. Frank and others helped to create the family type atmosphere that you only received at the Lab School. It’s hard to lie to your mother about your performance on a math test when she plays spades with your Geometry teacher on Thursdays. The Lab School faculty played a pivotal role in my learning experience and provided the foundation to assist me in becoming a Lead Engineer here at NASA.
Personally, Southern Lab is directly responsible for one of my greatest accomplishments… my wife and 1991 class mate Denise Metevia-Armstrong. I think it’s safe to say that I am grateful for the OPPORTUNITIES that The Lab School has provided and that’s why I am still active today. I’d like to challenge everyone reading this to become active and give back to the Lab family that helped us to get where we are today. Donate your time or money (or both) to help ensure that this great institution remains open and continues to thrive and help future generations just like it helped us!
